2024 Research Report

I am delighted to share with you the 2024 Research Report (PDF download link) for the Department of Radiation Oncology, Princess Alexandra Hospital.

During the past year we have offered 18 trials, with an additional 25 studies closed to accrual but continuing in follow-up phases. It is important to acknowledge the 894 people who have graciously agreed to participate on these studies, and the hard work of our staff from the Cancer Trials Unit who have made this possible.

This year, investigators from our department were awarded over $7.5 M in research grant funding including NHMRC and MRFF. This is a significant investment and highlights the capability, impact and promise that our work brings across Australia and beyond.  I would also like to acknowledge and thank generous funding support from Metro South Health Research Support Scheme and PA Research Foundation. Through these local competitive grant opportunities, we can encourage early-career and new research capacity within our craft groups.

In 2024 we recorded 66 peer-reviewed publications across a vast range of topics; radiotherapy technical innovation, head & neck cancer, supportive care research and brain cancers the most common themes.

This included 5 publications in Lancet Oncology and 1 in Lancet. Two of the highest impact studies were both co-authored by A/Prof David Pryor. FASTRACK II was a multicentre, non-randomised phase 2 trial of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy for primary kidney cancer and SARC032 was a randomised trial to assess the benefit of adding immunotherapy to surgery and radiation therapy in extremity soft tissue sarcoma. Both studies have defined a new standard of care in these diseases.

There were 29 conference abstracts and 56 speakers from our department involved across a range of forums representing Medical, Radiation Therapy, Medical Physics and Cancer Collaborative groups. There were also international presentations delivered in Washington, New York, San Diego and Houston in the USA, UK, Vienna and New Zealand.

You will see a number of people continue with higher degrees. I would like to congratulate A/Prof Lachlan McDowell who recently completed his PhD through University of Melbourne and received the Deans Award for Excellence in Graduate Research. In 2024, Lachlan also received the Emerging Research Award from TROG.

Dr Mihir Shanker also received the Young Professional Award at International SRS Congress 2024; Prof Prabhakar Ramachandra received the Kenneth Clarke Award from the Australian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine; and Chelsea Cameron (QUT radiation therapy student) supervised by Dr Elizabeth Brown for Best Student paper at ASMIRT (Darwin 2024).

It is invigorating to reflect upon these significant contributions and achievements. I am grateful to Rochelle Palleson, Sharon Watson, Anna Koch, Nakia Beaton, Dr Elizabeth Brown, Dr Cathy Hargrave and Andrew Puffett who have helped to carefully curate this information and present it so professionally. All within Radiation Oncology should be proud of what we have been able to deliver over the past 12 months.

A/Prof Mark Pinkham

2024 has been a year of highlights and accolades in Radiation Oncology Trials, especially for the Genitourinary & Sarcoma Teams. The TROG 15.03 FASTRACK II Trial – Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR), investigated an alternative treatment for those patients with Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), who are unsuitable for surgery. The PAH team played a major role in recruiting 14 patients for this trial. This resulted in 100% local control with median 43mth follow-up. As a result, these findings were published in The Lancet Oncology and will be included into International guidelines and establish SABR as a valid treatment option for primary RCC.

The Prostate Trial PROMETHEUS, had its long term outcomes published in the European Urology Oncology journal. Again PAH teams (ROPAIR/ROPART) played a major role recruiting 33 patients to this study. The results showed a 95% 5 year control with SBRT boost for unfavourable risk prostate cancer. This outcome establishes a regimen as an alternative treatment option to brachytherapy boosts.

SARC032 Trial offered neoadjuvant RT +/-Pembrolizumab for a rare high grade sarcoma group. It was challenging to recruit patients and to coordinate this trial,  particularly across  the translational components. The combination of immunotherapy with pre-op RT has made the first significant gains for these soft tissue sarcomas in many years. PAH contributed 6 patients to this international study which found significant DFS advantage with the use of Pembrolizumab . These results were published in the Lancet as a promising new treatment option for these patients.

As previously mentioned, cancer trials continue to become more complicated, and frequently involve many modalities, such Radiation, Chemo/Immunotherapy & Surgery as demonstrated in the above trials. Without the co-operation of many hospital departments, the commitment of staff & the patients themselves who participate, it would be difficult to obtain the evidence needed to advance medical knowledge and practices to achieve improved patient outcomes and survival rates.

Currently, the Trials Teams work across the two campuses of ROPAIR & ROPART and consists of four full time & two part time Trial Coordinators. The Teams are well supported by the Medical, Nursing, Radiation Therapy, (including Clinical Trials RTQA), Administration, and other Health Professionals.

On behalf of the Cancer Trials Team, I would like to thank everyone’s participation and commitment as we continue to work on our current and upcoming trials, which assist in producing groundbreaking outcomes for our cancer patients.
