The medical, nursing, radiation therapy, allied health and administration team from PA Hospital, Radiation Oncology - Ipswich Road Campus (ROPAIR) have proved that targeted strategies for person-centred care improve safety for everyone.
Their exceptional professionalism in managing the highly complex needs of a patient using team coordination, compassion, and environment supports resulted in safety for everyone on the ward and no significant behavioural escalations.
Radiation Oncologist, Dr Lachlan McDowell commended the coordination of the team which resulted in them being awarded the PAH Staff Award for July.
“Their calm, coordinated, and compassionate approach created a respectful and supportive environment, allowing the patient to feel heard and cared for throughout,” he said in his nomination. “The patient’s feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the team’s empathy and commitment to patient-centred care.”
As they planned ahead for the seven-week treatment cycle, the focus was on care planning including case management for behaviours of concern, flagging escalations for known triggers, multidisciplinary team awareness and environmental interventions.
“This was a situation that could have easily escalated, yet the team’s proactive and skilled management resulted in an outstanding outcome, a successful treatment cycle for the patient, and I am deeply proud to work alongside such a dedicated group,” Dr McDowell said.
